  • An arduous journey of keeping notes!

    efore i come to the point;

    It’s not always easy to pick up any book and start reading it. There is an intense pre-reading phase. Starting with a long gaze at the book cover so as to see whether it fits in the Instagram aesthetic metre, then moving onto YouTube recommendation videos for that book, and now since I conveniently shift my attention to get the dopamine dose from video content, in no time I find myself enjoying flying beast vlogs. After ghosting the book for a while now, I will pick it up again and read a few pages, lose interest, and keep it aside, and then hours later, or may be the next day, I will finally reach a consensus on reading it entirely.

    Speaking of one of my current challenges out of the zillion others, for me it’s not about just reading a book, I dissect the book entirely by taking notes with pen/pencil (depending on how expensive the book is), i will underline best lines- write my own little ramblings around the book (just in case the author needs my opinion), i will also write my own thoughts and highlight the new words for my vocab ( as if i am going to come back again to refer it). all of this lasts until i lose my pen somewhere else, at which point i have no access to pen/pencil in my immediate surrounding plus i am too sluggish to look for one, Also, by this stage, I’ve become so engaged in the book that I need to finish it as much as possible before falling asleep.

    Another day- i will again find the pen and resume my reading, Now comes the point where i flip back considerable amount of pages which has left without the underlines and highlights, IT HURTS!

    It hurts when i think of the best lines that could not get underlined, that had so much potential to reach to an Instagram post or a temp story, those lines that i thought would be best to win an argument, or those new words which i could have casually used in front of my friends or in any chat to impress the other person on screen. and now i hold zero memory of where those lines and words are in the book, i flip back pages in sheer panic but I can’t find one; I try to discover some of the pages I thought I must have folded, but it’s too late!

    Now comes the last episode of this long write-up; THE FINAL CALL- it always boils down to these two options 1) if its a fiction book then i have to finish it since i am at cliffhanger and don’t have time to sob over this petty issue 2) if its a non fiction then i will definitely call my old friend whose name is Procrastination and make a fake promise that i will re-read the non-underlined pages again-take notes and finish it. we all know what happens next!

    I hope you liked it!

    Wow, I relate to that way too much! The whole process of pre-reading and then obsessively taking notes, only to lose the pen and feel that panic about unmarked pages—I've been there. Have you ever thought of going digital with your notes? It might save you from the pen dilemma and that haunting feeling of missing out on those "Instagram-worthy" lines. Some great note-taking apps even use AI to make the process easier. Check this out: https://setapp.com/app-reviews/note-taking-apps-for-mac. Might help!
