  • Are Manual Bids Worth It in Google Ads?

I’ve been running automated bidding strategies in Google Ads for a few months, but I’m curious about manual bidding. A colleague mentioned that manual bidding gives you more control and can sometimes save money. I’m hesitant because it sounds like a lot of work to monitor and adjust bids constantly. Is it really worth the extra effort, or should I just stick with automated strategies?

Manual bidding can be worth it, but only if you’re ready to put in the time. I’ve used it for my local flower delivery business, and while it gave me more control, it definitely requires attention. The main advantage is that you can prioritize specific keywords or times of day. For example, I manually increased bids during peak hours when people are likely searching for same-day delivery. It’s also useful for controlling costs on low-converting keywords - just lower their bids. That said, it’s time-intensive, so I usually pair it with automated rules to make it easier. If you’re unsure where to start, test manual bidding on just one campaign and see how it performs. The Bluepear blog has a great section on balancing manual and automated approaches in ppc advertising - it’s a lifesaver if you’re new to this!
