Melchizedek, the King of Salem, is an important character in The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho. He assists Santiago in some way by allowing Santiago to learn about something called a Personal Legend. This idea turns around the whole life of Santiago. Melchizedek is a guide for the one who is ready to pursue their dreams in a kind of story telling. He instills into Santiago the knowledge of not being distracted while continuing his search for his wealth.
In the story, Melchizedek gives Santiago two stones, Urim and Thummim, to help him make decisions when he’s unsure. The stones are not simply stones, but they guide Santiago in learning to have faith in himself and his decisions. The wisdom words of Melchizedek make Santiago become brave, believe in himself and follow the instructions of “Soul of the World.” It also aids in leading him to his destiny. Because of this, Santiago attains more confidence to find more about himself and his intended purpose in life.
Melchizedek doesn’t stay long in the story, but his impact is big and important. Melchizedek provides readers with questions to contemplate what is in the book. If readers ever get to know whom he is they get to know the bigger picture that is destiny and purpose and following dreams and so on. His part in the story helps bring out the main messages and shows how everything in Santiago’s journey fits together.
